Highlights

Mountain Town Surrounded by Scenic Beauty

Bishop is the largest town in Owens Valley, located immediately to the east of the Sierra Nevada. Numerous peaks are within a short distance of Bishop, including Mount Humphreys (13,986') and White Mountain Peak (14,242') visible to the northeast.

The town was named after Bishop Creek, flowing out of the Sierra Nevada—the creek was named after Samuel Addison Bishop, a settler in the Owens Valley.

During the winter, cross country skiing is just a few miles outside of town. During the summer, you can hike, bike, climb and camp in one of the most dramatic mountain environments in the world — the Eastern escarpment of the High Sierra.

Bishop is near some of the best rock climbing and bouldering areas in North America. The three bouldering areas that are near the town of Bishop, the Happy Boulders, the Sad Boulders, and The Buttermilk Country.
